In a confluence of bizarre surprises, From Software debuted its new Activision-published action game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, at Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference. As we’ve long known, it’s not a Dark Souls game, and importantly, it’s not a Bloodborne sequel either. But it is directed by Souls luminary Hidetaka Miyazaki, and its press release confirms that Sekiro is set in late 1500s Sengoku Japan.Some other solid facts: it’s a “third-person action-adventure game with RPG elements”. Last winter at The Game Awards, Dark Souls studio From Software teased a game that they called “Shadows Die Twice.” Today at the Xbox E3 press conference, the developer officially revealed that game: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, an action game starring a ninja with a prosthetic arm.

Storyline

The game takes place in a re-imagined late 16th century Sengoku period Japan. At the end of the Sengoku era, warlord Isshin Ashina stages a bloody coup and seizes the land of Ashina. During this time, a nameless orphan is adopted by the wandering shinobi Owl, who names the orphan "Wolf". Twenty years later, the Ashina clan are on the brink of collapse due to a combination of the now elderly Isshin having fallen ill and the clan's enemies steadily closing in from all sides. Desperate to find a way to prevent the fall of his clan, Isshin's grandson Genichiro captures the Divine Heir Kuro, in hopes of using his "Dragon Heritage" to create an immortal army.
