Burnout is een racegame over typische Amerikaanse en Europese wegen, varierend van snelwegen, via bergwegen tot stadsparcours. Elke race kan met maximaal 4 coureurs verreden worden waarbij elke coureur zo goed mogelijk het overige verkeer moet zien te ontwijken. Als er zich crashes voordoen wordt dit zeer spectaculair vanuit drie verschillende hoeken herhaalt. Burnout is een pure hoge snelheid arcade racegame die voor ieder geschikt is. De verschillende play modes zijn: Championship, Duel, Single Race, Time Attack, Survival en multiplayer Head To Head mode.
