Darkest Dungeon, Prison Architect, Figment are cheap in GOG's weekend sale

Darkest Dungeon, Prison Architect, Figment are cheap in GOG's weekend sale

GOG's latest sale offers escapes to dungeons, jails and fantasy worlds this weekend. Most notably from now through Monday August 14, Red Hook Studios' wonderful and brutally-challenging RPG Darkest Dungeon is on sale for £7.59/$10.73 with a 60 percent discount. I'll talk about the sale's other games in a second, but I first want to highlight this section of Ian Birnbaum's 88-scored review. You should of course read Ian's words in full, but this particular except strikes at the heart of what makes Darkest Dungeon work: The more I played, the more I grew detached from the heroes in my roster. I even refused to rename or invest in the veterans of multiple tours—exactly the opposite of my squads in XCOM, which were all customized and named for family and friends. Becoming attached would make it more stressful to send them on another ill-conceived quest for trinkets and coin, and even more disappointing when they came back broken and des

Order of Magnitude is a colony simulation game from the makers of Prison Architect

Order of Magnitude is a colony simulation game from the makers of Prison Architect

Introversion's Prison Architect was a compelling simulation game that's generated some classic Chris Livingston diary features and continues to evolve years after a massively successful alpha release. In space building game Order of Magnitude, the scale of simulation is a lot grander, yet a similar principle applies of putting you in control of the environment for a group of people but not in direct control of the people themselves. Instead of a prison, you're in space, trying to ensure humanity survives after something terrible has happened to Earth. And instead of prisoners, you have entire colonies. The game is in such an early state that Introversion co-founder Mark Morris seems reluctant to call it a full announcement. Hell, the game isn't even mentioned on Introversion's homepage right now. "We're nowhere near even having a launch date in mind for it at the moment," Morris told me at EGX Rezzed in London last week. "You can say this i

Control the warden in Prison Architect's latest update

Control the warden in Prison Architect's latest update

Prison Architect's latest update lets you control your prison warden, and that small change has a massive impact on the way you play. Rather than the normal all-seeing viewpoint, the whole map is covered by a fog of war, save for whatever your warden would be able to see with their own two eyes. Anything around a corner is hidden and can't be interacted with, so if you want to upgrade your maximum security wing you're going to have to walk there first. Gulp. You WASD around the prison and can pick up objects, including weapons and body armour to protect yourself from inmate attack, which seems almost inevitable. If you don't want to get your hands dirty then you can recruit guards to your personal protection squad. They'll keep you safe but cost more money. I think it's a really clever addition. It will inevitably lead to slower expansion because you'll be constantly wary of getting injured, and you can turn on permadeath mode if you want to ramp up t
