Product Description

In 1845, Sir John Franklin led an expedition to discover the route that would connect the Pacific and Atlantic. When he disappeared, explorers from Britain and America set out to find the missing voyage and succeed where Franklin failed - by finding the Northwest Passage. Carefully place exploration tiles, maneuver around ice floes, discover islands and send your crews on sleds across solid land. Be careful - as the seasons progress, the North gets colder and the last thing you want is to find yourself stuck in the ice, losing crews and equipment. Be the first to discover the route to the Pacific to earn the Prestige you need to bring victory for your team! CONTENTS 1 board, 64 large exploration tiles, 32 small exploration tiles, 9 cairn tokens, 9 Inuit tokens, 10 Franklin tokens, 12 strait tokens, 20 cartography tokens, 4 Northwest Passage tokens, 3 Greenland tokens, 1 solar disc, bag; 4 individual boards, 4 ships, 4 sleds, 4 scoring discs, 32 crewmen; 1 rule booklet.

Great euro strategy game with a really cool theme! The game pieces are made of wood, which augments the mid-19th century look; and the map tiles are sturdy and thick. The combined mechanics of tile-laying, resource-gathering and worker placement work very well to give a sense of navigating unexplored territory. The movement of the solar disk adds tension to gameplay, and keeps the game moving at a good pace (as well as preventing overly-long game time). Rulebook is short and easy to understand. This has quickly become one of our favorites.

The game is pretty fun. I loved the use of exploration tied in with the narrative. The flipping and pairing of titles provided a nice game element. I've played once so far with a full group of people and it was really enjoyable. After going through all the instructions and storyline it took an hour or so to get through the game. I narrowly lost, shameful.

Would suggest this game to people who enjoy Catan, Carcassonne and Thurn & Taxis.

The moves are quite stilted and do not feel like a ship on water or a sled on ice. It becomes quite an effort to play because it is not too fun. The games looks and feels nice. The sun moving around for the seasons on the ice is a pretty sweet idea. Making the landscape with the tiles is also a challenge.

A much more involved take on tile placement games. I like Carcassonne, but while it's simplicity makes it great for super casual quick gaming or as an intro game, it's not really that involved when you want more strategy and game play.

Expedition Northwest Passage adds several elements to the tile placement that keep it engaging, strategic, slightly tactical, and fun. First of all, the way you track your actions by moving crewmen around is really cool, theme-relevent, and make it easy to keep track of things - but at the same time, additional actions on that turn cost more, so you really have to judge when the best time is to do certain things. You can spend a lot more actions to swoop past your opponent and grab some quick points, but lose out on the rest of that round and possibly fall behind. It's a fun game of exploration and strategy.

What makes it extra fun is that the seasons change and the water freezes and thaws, and this adds an entirely new dimension to the game than just your turn/my turn/game over; this aspect alone makes it quite unlike 99% of any other Euro-style games out there, and it guarantees you *must* have a long-term strategy in mind rather than just play-by-play tactics.

Overall, the gameplay is really great - historical, easy to grasp, and with enough variation to keep it from getting repetitive. The game pieces are slightly under par for the usual Euro-style meeples and tiles, though. They're not *bad* quality, but compared with the nice hefty pieces from Z-Man's Carcassonne, for example, they're definitely a rung or two down.

Overall I can't think of a reason why this isn't 5 stars in my book.

A very well designed game. With creative dynamics like seasonal freezing and thawing that allow you to split your expedition into sea and sled teams is brilliant. Well balanced, a good amount of player interaction and tonnes of replay value.

Though game box is covered in English writing, the game rules included within the box are in a few languages....none of them English. You can find them online (& print pretty easily), but if the game is not going to include an English rulebook it should probably specify that on the box and in the product description.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting !

Adult Eurogamers will enjoy this one. Plays well with 2 , 3 or 4. The combination of progressing across the board as the ice moves in, while collecting items of interest along the way means there are many different strategies to try. If you know about the Franklin expedition the game is even better!

Muy buen juego. Temática interesante y rejugabilisad absoluta. Los tableros individules demasiado finos y los tokens de exploración demasiado pequeños. De ahí que no le doy 5 estrellas

4.0 out of 5 stars Una piccola opera d'arte
Reviewed in Italy on October 22, 2016
